Aidan O'Brien's three-year-old turned up for the Group One opening day highlight of the Ebor Festival with wins in the Epsom Derby and Eclipse Stakes under his belt.

Jockey Ryan Moore sent the 5-4 favourite into the lead from the start, counting on the colt's stamina and class over this 2300m (1 mile and 1/4) trip.

After thwarting a late dangerous looking attack from French challenger Calandagan, City of Troy duly gave trainer Aidan O'Brien a seventh success in the Group One showpiece, lowering the track record set by Sea The Stars in 2009 by almost one second.

"He's got a very big engine, good horses have to have speed and they have to stay. He does that," Moore told ITV.

City of Troy was completing a rewarding day for the Irish training maestro.

The 54-year-old had earlier watched his Irish Derby winner Los Angeles scrape home in the Group Two Voltigeur Stakes en route to a tilt at next month's English St Leger for which he is now priced at 5-2.

O'Brien's smart two-year-old The Lion In Winter had set the O'Brien ball rolling with an impressive win in the Group Three Acomb Stakes.
